Or at the door! We heard you wanted to see some local derby...The Rock Coast Rollers, Midcoast Maine’s first and only flat track roller derby league, has announced Coastal Chaos, their first-ever public bout on their home turf. Set for June 2 at 7:00 PM, the bout pits the Battle Hips against the Thugboats in an inter-league grudge-match that promises thrills, chills and plenty of flat-track action. The event will take place on the concrete floor of the league’s new summer home at the Midcoast Recreation Center on Route 90 in Rockport. Doors open at 6:30 PM, and the ‘Rollers are encouraging fans to arrive early to allow time to grab some snacks, buy some swag and get good seats close to the mayhem. This is an unprecedented opportunity to see mixed teams of local roller derby veterans and last fall’s new recruits go helmet-to-helmet in their own back yard. Tickets are only $5 and can be purchased at Rock City Coffee, Atlantic Baking Co., Good Tern Food Coop, Serendipity, Rising Tide and other local businesses, as well as from the league’s website at rockcoastrollers.weebly.com. The Rock Coast Rollers league formed in early 2011 and is a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association. With leagues across North America drawing in amazing athletes and huge crowds, roller derby is on the rise, and the ‘Rollers are making a name for the region as they battle teams from across the northeastern US and southeastern Canada. Their next WFTDA bout will be against Vermont’s Upper Valley Vixens on June 23, with additional summer bouts to be announced. The Rock Coast Rollers are looking for additional referees, track officials and volunteers, and encourage anyone interested in the sport to consider becoming a part of the fast-growing phenomenon of roller derby and join a positive, empowering, community-oriented team that’s taking the locally-focused league onto the national scene one bout at a time. Learn more about the hard-hitting, wheel-burning women of the Rock Coast Rollers and the thrilling sport of flat track roller derby on their website, and then take in the awesome spectacle at Coastal Chaos live on June 2. $5 buys you a whole seat, but you’ll only need the edge! RCR takes on the Upper Valley Vixens. Be there!
